It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. Friendship, Love, and Hip Hop investigates how young Black men live and change inside a mental institution in contemporary America. While the youth in Hejtmanek's study face the rigidity of institutionalized life, they also productively maneuver through what the author analyzes as the 'give' - friendship, love, and hip hop - in the system. By becoming a full-time resident at the treatment facility she studied, Hejtmanek goes where most institutional ethnographers have not. A must-read for anyone interested in the meaning of confinement. This well-written and convincingly argued book is easy to teach and a vital contribution to the literature.

Preorders for the book are available here ahead of its October 10 release date. Kaves and I have been talking about doing this book for probably seven years. We're both fathers, and grew up during the greatest period of hip-hop music and culture in our humble opinions , so it made sense to put this together. When you have young children, it's so much more fun to help them learn by introducing them to something you love and can relate to. Thankfully, we each had that type of experience with a few books when our kids were learning to read, so passing that opportunity along to other parents and kids was something we really wanted to do.

Starting out in a bookshop he won the Bookseller of the Year award in , he was, until recently, editorial director at Granta, where he looked after writers including Han Kang , Eleanor Catton and Rebecca Solnit. Porter has found his own voice, combining the domestic and the mythic, the realist and the poetic, and Lanny is as playfully polyphonic and experimental as his first novel, made clear by the spidery italics crawling off the page. Is he real or not real? I want to do this for the rest of my life. Robert a City banker and Jolie an actor-turned-gruesome-thriller writer and their charming but troublesome son Lanny are new arrivals in the unnamed commuter village. I wanted him to be likable and understandable.
