Ratio, unit rate, rate tables, rational numbers, decimals, percents, equivalence, absolute value, number line, negative numbers. Significant Changes: New emphasis on ratio and unit rate and the comparison with equivalent fractions. The major driving force of the revision has been the inclusion of ratio at sixth grade. While CCSS begins instruction in fraction equivalence at third grade, we have taken a stand these ideas are unlikely to be mastered at the beginning of sixth grade. Consequently, some work on equivalence is included but we have increased the complexity of the work in this unit to support the development of ratios and development of rational number operations in later units. We have chosen to highlight differences between 1 fractions as numbers and part-whole relationships on the one hand, and 2 ratios as comparisons of numbers on the other.
In Prime Time , students will explore important properties of whole numbers. Many of these properties are related to multiplication and division. The Investigations will help students understand relationships among factors, multiples, divisors, and products. Students will also learn how the Distributive Property relates multiplication and addition. The Investigations in this Unit will help students understand the following ideas. When your child encounters a new problem, it is a good idea to ask these questions. In this Unit, you might ask questions such as:.
Answers will vary. Possible answers: The seventh-grade goal is twice the fifth-grade goal. The sixth-grade goal is 2 times the fifth-grade goal. Possible answers: The teachers goal is of the eighthgrade goal. This is true. If the teacher made groups of 2 boys and girls, there would be six of these groups with no children left out of a group. A ratio is a comparison of two quantities expressed with a phrase such as the ratio of 3 to 5 which means 3 for every 5. Such ratio comparisons are often written as common fractions and in the special notation A ratio comparison statement uses both numbers and words to show how two quantities are related. To write ratios, you can use the words for every to, or a colon :. For example, you may write these comparison statements. A unit rate is a comparison in which one of the numbers being compared is 1 unit. Find the unit rate: We are at the state fair.
