The Old Man and the Sea
During last 84 days, an old Cuban fisherman Santiago goes to the sea but cannot get any fish. His small friend Manolin continues to help him, although his father prohibits to do this. But the old and young men still see each other and speak about this and that. At 85th day old fisherman again goes to the sea as always on his small sailboat. This time he is being lucky and catching such big marlin, that nobody saw before. Next several days a big fight takes place between the man and the fish. Finally Santiago manages to exhaust and kill the huge fish.
Having nothing to read I picked up my copy of Hemingway's "The Old Man and The Sea" to see how much I remembered of it from my speed-reading class in Not much, as it turns out. At the end of the I've been having a hard time deciding what to say about this novel. I had long heard it described as a masterpiece and a sweeping tale about human suffering and perseverance but I knew very little Ernest Hemingway did more to influence the style of English prose than any other writer of his time.
No eBook available Amazon. I finished this earlier today and I have to say this was a wonderful little novella. I enjoyed it quite a great deal from beginning to end. Although it's sad and melancholy, it also happened to filled Read full review. I'm quite certain that speaking of this novella gave me a lower grade on my English Literature exam, as people find Hemingway dull and quite misogynistic.
Crisp, effortless prose. Oddly erratic plot, the Harry Morgan thread and the Richard Gordon thread really don't have anything to do with each other. The Richard Gordon part feels strongly Hemingway is the ultimate manipulator. He gets a lot of flack for his straightforward writing but I have found myself enjoying it. It doesn't always take flowery language to make a scene or a character. Ernest Hemingway did more to influence the style of English prose than any other writer of his time.
